Since 2016, the Berman Center for Jewish Studies has co-sponsored the Oxford Summer Institute in Modern and Contemporary Judaism, for which Professor Jodi Eichler-Levine and Professor Hartley Lachter serve as co-conveners, along with founders Dr. Miri Freud-Kandel (Oxford) and Professor Adam Ferziger (Bar Ilan University). This program brings together an international group of scholars around interdisciplinary themes and questions in modern Jewish studies. It functions as an advanced workshop in which a combination of outstanding senior scholars of Jewish religion and culture from around the globe join with select faculty from the University of Oxford and a select group of early career European Jewish Studies scholars for a week of intensive study and intellectual exchange. Recent themes have included “Technology,” “Worship, Space, and Performance,” and, in July 2023, “Authority and Leadership.”
